Poultry Farming

Need: Establish a poultry farm for meat and egg production.

Location: Kamuli District, Uganda, Sonrise Children’s Home compound

Background: Project includes construction of a secure coup large enough for 400 meat birds and 400 egg layers with fenced yard.

The Sonrise Children’s Home farm currently does not have any chickens. Also, our new self sustaining (in the years to come) restaurant, Zabuli, needs the meat and eggs for the business. They will buy from us at a reduced rate from what everyone else sells them for to give us income and to help them buy at a cheaper rate.

Benefits:

  1. Provide food for Children’s Home and school.

  2. Sell eggs to Sonrise economic development project, Zabuli Eats restaurant located in Jinja.

  3. Vocational training for our children. Would also provide some a small compensation.

  4. Additional employment for farmers

Budget: $13,500

Turkey Farming

Need: Turkey Pen, Fencing, and 100 Young Turkeys.

Location: Kamuli District, Uganda, Sonrise Children’s Home compound

Justification: As part of our overall plan to increase production of farm animals for food and sale, we desire to establish a turkey farm. This will require the construction of a secure enclosure and shelter for the birds.

Benefits: The turkeys will provide food for the home and an income from the ones we sell.

Budget: $10,000

Land, Barn, Fencing for Goats

Need: 5 acres of land, construct a barn and install fencing

Location: Kamuli District, Uganda, Sonrise Children’s Home compound

Background: We need a larger fenced grazing area for our 40 goats. We must walk them from their existing barn and small fenced area each day to graze.  We’ve been grazing them on our soccer field and adjacent land which is too wet in the rainy season causing us to lose goats to sicknesses. We have an opportunity to purchase a 5-acre track of highland adjacent to our existing compound.

Benefits:

  • Maintain healthier goats

  • Fenced area allows our farmers to work other tasks rather than constantly moving the goats to grass

  • The new location for goats will return the soccer field to the school.

  • Enable us to breed the goats

  • Enable us to conduct community self-sustaining projects.

  • As our goat production increases, our food supply will increase.

Budget: $12,000

Need: Increase and sustain livestock production. (cows, goats, pigs, turkeys, and chickens).

Location: Kamuli District, Uganda, Sonrise Children’s Home compound

The Sonrise Children’s Home is striving to become 60% self-sustaining within 5-years. Please pledge to support our animal production and community impact initiatives.

Benefits:

  1. Provides food and income for our Children’s Home (100 children and adults) and Community School (300 children).

  2. Supports our economic development projects in partnership with the villagers in our area of influence. Our goal is to come along-side our village families in agreement to care for and reproduce granted animals so they may provide for themselves. We want them to realize our help as a hand-up and not a hand-out.

  3. Double our production of animals which includes needed veterinary care, employ caretakers, provide feed and other items necessary to this need.

  4. The chickens, cows, goats, pigs, turkeys provide meat, eggs, and milk for our home and school. Any overage we experience can be sold for income.

Budget: $18,000 (annually) or $1,500 (monthly)
